Missing AIS encounters

We’ve detected an issue with how automatic identification system (AIS) encounter events are generated. 

The issue leads to missing encounters that:

  1. Start after 22:00, and 
  2. End before 02:00

Encounters that either start or end on the day boundary have a start or end timestamp that is incorrect by up to 2 hours. 

Scale of issue
Our estimate is that approximately 1.5% of encounters are missing and 10-15% have an incorrect start or end timestamp. From our investigation, we believe this issue has been present since encounter events were first released.

Our team is actively working on a fix, and we’ll post another update here as soon as it’s resolved.
